Our deepest sympathy as well. We admired John, enjoyed his stories and benefitted from his selfless giving. We especially appreciate the legacy he left in promoting living history....we loved visiting Fort New Salem. Our son was inspired to do a social studies project on log cabins, mostly due to John's influence. My husband was privileged to know John longer than I. We have lost a "good one." Our prayers go out to his family.
Message from Rachel Tompkins - October 16, 2012 at 05:43 AM

John was a creator of beautiful things, a lover of all the traditional and useful arts of the mountains and passionate about passing on his love to new generations. I had lost touch over the years but today I'm remembering his gentle heart and spirit. I send my love and sympathy to his family.Rachel Tompkins

John was my professor at Salem College in both the art department and Fort New Salem. He was a wonderful and caring teacher who loved West Virginia and the native arts and crafts. Because of him, I became a student at Fort New Salem and would dress up in costumes of the past and take part in crafts such as weaving, printing, and basket-making. He taught from his heart and I feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful teacher. I have always had a love of the art of Paul Cezanne because of John also. I can remember that in the art department, we always drank International coffee until John started making it himself and bringing in. He mixed different things together and it was wonderful. John was just a kind wonderful man who loved what he did. I learned so much from him and those things have always influenced my life and I think of him often. I will always remember his laugh and the way he would cock his head to the side when he was thinking of something funny. I will forever miss him. John....God be with you. I love you. Cheryl Teter

I never got to meet Mr. Randolph, but he changed my life forever. I lived and worked at the Fort for nigh on three years and it is the first place I have ever come home to. Thanks you for everything.
Message from Marie Smith - October 14, 2012 at 11:32 AM

I was a student of John's at Fort New Salem for several years in the late 1970's. He inspired all of us who gathered around him at Fort New Salem, and instilled in us - and in me especially - a love for native culture and it's preservation, and for West Virginia. I remember John as kind, sincere, passionate, very creative and full of love for what he did. One of my fondest memories was of a trip to his home with a fellow student one Sunday afternoon. John treated us to several hours of listening to vintage, "oral history" recordings of native Appalachian songs - many of those tunes I still sing today when hiking in the woods, and always, I remember John. I will always love and appreciate you, John Randolph. Thank you so much for all you shared!

One of my favorite memories was getting to the Fort early in the morning (just about every morning) and sharing a cup of coffee with John Randolph. We would raid Shelba's spice cabinet to make the coffee more interesting. It's little things like that that endeared him to me.
