Yvonne “Vonnie” Freedman Obituary

Yvonne “Vonnie” Marie (Coberly) Freedman, 56, of Clarksburg, WV passed from this life peacefully at home Monday, May 25, 2026, while her husband and daughter held her hands.  She was born in Clarksburg on March 10, 1970 to Barbara J. (Newbrough) Coberly and James E. Coberly who both survive.

Yvonne fought a courageous, extended battle with severe early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, which she was officially diagnosed with in 2021, but suffered with since 2018 at the age of 48.

She leaves behind her husband of 24 years, Roger Francis Freedman, and their 22-year-old daughter, Sophia Michelle Freedman, whom she loved and cherished more than anything in the world.  Two brothers and a sister-in-law James T. Coberly and Matthew E. Coberly and wife Courtney.  Stepsister Sherry Stewart & husband Thomas. She also leaves behind several beloved nieces and nephew and countless members of her extended family.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents Raymond E. Newbrough and Mary M (Mechinsky) Newbrough, whom she loved and adored beyond words and time, paternal grandparents Carl J. Coberly, Aretta (Greynolds) Coberly, and Sophia (Habeb) Coberly, and stepmother Sharon A. (Faulkner) Coberly.

Yvonne graduated from Liberty High School in 1988 and continued her education at United Hospital Center’s school of radiologic technology and Fairmont State University.  She had a storied career at the Louis A. Johnson Veteran’s medical center where she continued working for 31 years prior to her early retirement in 2021.  It was during this time that she developed a deep appreciation for our Veterans and would never pass up an opportunity to acknowledge their sacrifices.

Yvonne was deeply rooted in her Catholic faith and was a member of All Saints Catholic Church where she served on parish council and was a Eucharistic minister for decades.

She spent her younger days caring for her family in countless ways from watching her younger brothers to preparing meals for the family while their mother worked. Yvonne will always be remembered as a caring person who chose to give as opposed to receive.

Yvonne assumed the role of the family matriarch, hosting all holidays and family celebrations at her home with warmth.  All were welcome, both family and friends alike, and countless invaluable memories were made during these times.

At home, Yvonne was the center of her core family.  She loved and was loved fiercely by her husband with whom she shared her dreams and most fragile moments.  She raised and nurtured her daughter, passing on her warmth, intelligence, passion, and most importantly, love.  She gave her the confidence and support to allow her to succeed and be independent in life.

Near the end of her time with her family, she held on to be present to see her daughter graduate college, stay with her husband to celebrate 25 years of true love, and to acknowledge the love for her family as well as was allowed.

Yvonne was a bright spot in even the darkest of days and a calming presence for all. She will always be loved and missed dearly by the countless souls that were privileged enough to be touched by her.  She is no longer where she was, but will always be where they are….

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Thursday, June 4, 2026 at All Saints Catholic Church located in Bridgeport, WV.  All are welcome.  A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in the near future.
