Vernon Harvath Obituary

Vernon Douglas Harvath, 78, of Lumberport passed away on Wednesday, November 27, 2024 at United Hospital Center after an extended illness.  He was born on March 24, 1946 in Cleveland, OH, a son of the late Frank and Idella Boone Harvath.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 55 wonderful years, Sharon Harvath; children, Amanda Rose Rexrode and spouse Michael of Salem, Kerry Vernon Harvath and spouse Nicole of Clarksburg, and Serenity Idell Heck and spouse David of Stonewood; ten grandchildren, Jessica Collins, Aaron Rexrode, Mikayla Rexrode-Kovar and husband Tim, Skilor Perdue, Cole Harvath and wife Ashleigh, Zain Harvath, and Zaven Harvath, Samantha Heck, Logan Heck, and Alyssa Heck; two great-grandchildren, Adalynn Harvath and Alyra Harvath; one sister, Ellen Francis West and husband Kenneth of Henderson, TN; extended family, Karen Burr, Sandra Burnside, Rose Bramer, Patricia Nutter, Jean Davisson, and Doug McGee.

Vernon attended Wallace and Lumberport High Schools and studied for two years at Fairmont State University, majoring in Mechanical Engineering. He was a master electrician, a welder, certified heating and cooling technician, and was considered a jack-of-all-trades. Vernon worked 16 years at J.C. Hart Foundry and several years at the Clarksburg Casket Factory. His last employment was at the VA Hospital in Clarksburg, where he was a boiler operator- a job he loved.

Vernon served his country in the United States Army and was deployed to Vietnam, where he received his Medal of Honor. He also received numerous awards while stationed in Fort Carson, CO. He was a member of the Legion Post 31 of Shinnston for several years and a member of the Color Guard. Vernon loved treasure hunting and, on many days, you could find him out in a field with his metal detector. He loved the holidays, and made the Fourth of July go out with a bang. He liked to fish with his father and brother-in-law but never came home with any fish. He was a very humorous person and you could count on him to make you laugh before the day was gone. He loved his family and appreciated the chatter around the table at Thanksgiving and Christmas time.

Special thanks to Dr. Osmon and all the staff at the Infusion Center at UHC for whom he greatly appreciated and who took very good care of him, both medically and emotionally. Also, thanks to the V.A. Home Based Primary Care Staff, who worked with him in every aspect of his care.

Family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Dr., Clarksburg, on Saturday, November 30, 2024 from 2-5 PM.  With Military Honors at 4:00 PM with the Harrison County Honor Guard.  Online condolences may be sent to DavisFuneralHomeWV.com.  Davis Funeral Home is honored to assist the Harvath family.
