Sammie Lee Cottrill, 80, of Stonewood, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at her home. She was born on August 8, 1944 in Clarksburg, a daughter of the late Samuel David Southern and Texie Mae Wright Southern.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Roger Dawson Cottrill, whom she married on December 24, 1959
She is also survived by three sons, David Cottrill and wife Pamela Jo of West Milford, Bradford Cottrill and wife Laura of Laurel Park and Brian Eric Cottrill and wife Anita of Mount Clare; eight grandchildren, Scott, Todd and wife Brandon, Staci and husband Micky Davis, Nick, Sean, Brooke and husband Justin Conte, Hannah and Erica; seven great grandchildren, Grant, Mason, Dorian, Elias, Grayson, Mason and Madison; and nieces, Sheila Furner and Barbara Janes.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by two sisters, Nancy Pennell and Helen Fratt; one nephew, Paul Pennell.
She was employed with Culligan Water and also was a self-employed dog groomer and breeder, taking special interests in Bassett Hounds and Poodles. She loved animals of all kinds, and would often rescue them, giving them care until she was able to find a permanent home for them. She enjoyed taking care of plants and flowers and thrift shopping and yard sales with her best friend, Nealy McElwain. Sammie was also a proud member of the Democratic Women Association and the American Baptist Women as well as a longtime member of First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort.
The Cottrill family would like to thank WVU Medicine Hospice and the caregivers who have been taking care of Roger and Sammie.
Family and friends will be received at First Baptist Church of Nutter Fort, 219 Maryland Avenue, Nutter Fort, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 from 2-6 pm where a funeral service will be held at 6:00 pm with Reverend Don Fowler presiding.
