Ruby Heckert Obituary

Ruby C. Heckert, 94, of Clarksburg passed away on Friday, October 30, 2020 at her residence with family by her side. She was born July 25, 1926 in Kingwood, daughter of the late William and Mae Uphold Conner.   

Ruby graduated from Masontown High School, Class of 1943, West Virginia Business College and attended Fairmont State College. She retired from the State of WV Unemployment Office as a Claims Center Manager for over thirty years. She married Rev. J. Ray Heckert on December 28, 1949 and became a minister’s wife while in Kansas and worked for General Motors for a short period while he was in seminary. Ruby taught Sunday school at several churches and camp counselor and nurse at Camp Cowen for many years.  She was a member of Lumberport Baptist Church, The First Baptist Church of Wellsburg, and the Clarksburg Baptist Church where she was a deaconess. She was a member of the Young at Heart, American Baptist Women, the Golden’eers, and the Clarksburg Senior Center. Ruby volunteered with the Food Pantry at the Church and the Clarksburg Mission. Also through the years, she was a Girl Scout leader, Methodist minister, and involved with children’s sporting activities especially her grandchildren. Most people will remember her working hard with the Clarksburg Panther Pop Warner Association where she spent eight seasons in the concession stand and the election polls in Stealey. She was an avid WVU Mountaineer Fan and held season tickets for lots of years. Her hobbies were gardening and spending time in the yard. She loved giving back to her community and quality time with her family.            

Ruby is survived by her daughter, Roseann Heckert Wetzel, Clarksburg; son, John Heckert and Bonnie, Jamestown, TN; three grandchildren, J.T. Cook and Amber, Knoxville, TN, Nicole Leary and John, Clarksburg, Amanda Heckert, Atlanta, GA; eight great grandchildren, Bryce, Riley, Kolton, Braelyn, Tyler, Khloe, Payton, Trace; one sister, Josephine Conner, Reedsville; three brothers, Daniel Conner, Grafton, Glenn Conner and Linda, Reedsville, and Gary Conner and Karen, Kingwood; numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by her husband Rev. J. Ray Heckert; two grandsons, Dustin Anthony Baldwin and Michael Snider; two sisters, Hazel Arnold and Wilma Eaglen; two brothers, William Conner and Leland Conner.
