Raymond Frederick Ash Sr., 83, passed away at his home on March 21, 2026, surrounded by his family, following a courageous battle with lung cancer. He was born on August 7, 1942 in Clarksburg, the son of the late Frederick Evans and Gertrude Griffith Ash.
Raymond was a preacher’s son who grew up during the difficult years following the Great Depression, learning early the value of hard work and the importance of a dollar. In his younger years, he displayed a rebellious spirit, leaving school to join the Marine Reserves—a decision that helped shape the course of his early life.
He spent many years working as a mechanic, a trade well-suited to his hands-on nature and love of fixing things. Later in life, he retired as a supervisor from Jefferson Corporation. Even in retirement, Raymond remained passionate about tinkering with small motors.
Raymond found joy in life’s simple pleasures. He loved spending time in the mountains, fishing with friends, and camping in his younger days. He was also known for his social nature, enjoying evenings playing poker, trying his luck gambling, and visiting with friends around town.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 60 years, Linda Lou Ash; his sons, Raymond “RJ” Ash Jr. and Jeffery Scott Ash Sr.; his grandson, Jacob Ryan Ash; his daughter-in-law, Wyona Blanche Ash; his parents, Evans and Gertrude Ash; and his siblings, Patty and Jimmy.
Raymond is survived by his granddaughter, Jennifer Ash and her family; Jack Booker; Emily Dixon; Makayla Dixon; Destinee Ash; Ryan Ash; Damon Booker and his wife and children; Devin Champion and children; Gavin Mayle; Kaiden Mayle; and Jayden Ball. He is also survived by his grandson, Scott Ash of Parkersburg and his children, Legion Ash and Gemini Ash; his great-great-grandson, Jackson Wright; and his brother-in-law, Tom Mason and his wife, Jean.
In keeping with the family’s wishes, Raymond will be cremated. Online condolences may be made at www.DavisFuneralHomeWV.com.
