Phyllis Bowie Obituary

Phyllis Ann Bowie (McElfresh), born August 17, 1951, in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, passed away on May 13, 2025.  She was the daughter of Norman Victor McElfresh and Dortha Lee Ferguson. Though their child by birth, Phyllis was lovingly raised by her aunt and uncle, Eliza Victoria Phillippe and George E. Phillippe, who brought her into their home and hearts as their own—a quiet act of love that helped shape the compassionate, radiant woman she became.

At the age of 22, on January 11, 1974, Phyllis married Pete Bowie in Hurricane, West Virginia. They were together for 29 years and raised two sons—John and Joseph Bowie—both of whom survive her and carry her spirit with them every day.

Phyllis was an extraordinary woman who shaped the lives of her children and everyone she met through her vibrant energy, her kindness, and her unmistakable presence. She saw the good in people and met the world with trust and compassion. She loved all living things, especially animals, and spent a lifetime rescuing and caring for countless dogs and cats. Her sons, both of whom now care for dogs of their own, carry that compassion forward. Her heart was enormous, and her home was a refuge for any creature in need.

She was a gifted musician and songwriter, with a natural talent for expressing love, strength, and grace through music. She played both piano and guitar, writing songs about the love between parents and children. Her beloved piano—affectionately named Rudy—was a gift from the Clarksburg Episcopal Church and the instrument through which she created some of her most meaningful work. She passed down her love of music to her children, who now cherish and play her Guild guitar in her name.

Phyllis worked in general accounting and spent several years employed by the Clarksburg Telegram newspaper. After retirement, she dedicated herself to volunteering at the Clarksburg Senior Citizens Center, giving of herself with warmth and enthusiasm. She was also a longtime supporter of the Humane Society. Her kindness, compassion, and lifelong commitment to service—whether through music, community, or rescuing animals—left an impact that will not be forgotten.

She was also a quiet warrior. In the final years of her life, Phyllis battled rheumatoid arthritis with incredible strength and resilience. Though it brought her pain, she never let it take her spirit. She carried on with grace, humor, and unwavering determination, continuing to care for others and create beauty even as she faced her own struggles.

Phyllis spent the last 18 years of her life with her loving partner, Byron Funkhouser, who survives her and will miss her dearly. She was a woman of unique style and vibrant character. She had an eye for beautiful and curious things, and especially cherished the glass cullet mined by her son John. Her giggle was bright and unforgettable, and her ability to truly listen made everyone around her feel valued.

New and old acquaintances alike thought she was so cool—because she was. She carried herself with dignity, humor, and warmth. Saying she will be missed is an understatement.

She adored the ocean, and her ashes will be spread on Chincoteague Island, a place where she always felt at home.

Above all else, Phyllis was deeply loved. She shaped our world. And she always will.
