Niels Christian Stilling (“Chris”), 93, of Flemington, and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, August 15, 2025. He is survived by his partner and wife of over 50 years, Cathy, and his children Becky (Jean), Mark, and Erik (Dawn), along with two grandchildren, Megan (Nick) and Rosie (Tom), and one great-granddaughter expected soon. In addition to his parents, Chris was preceded in death by his son Paul, his grandson Justin, and his sister Arra.
Chris proudly served his country and is a Korean War veteran. A lifelong learner, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Loyola University N.O. and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Maryland. His passion for learning led him to a dedicated career in elementary education, where he served almost 40 years as a teacher, principal, counselor, and a State supervisor of guidance.
A man of many talents and interests, Chris was an expert woodworker. He would spend hours in his woodworking shop making wooden plates, bowls, and other beautiful pieces. Over his lifetime he enjoyed memorizing 100s of poems and then would take delight in reciting some of his repertoire to his family and friends. Given a choice, Chris would have classical music playing. He maintained his excellent physical condition through hours of daily farming, that not only kept the farm looking manicured, but also allowed him to make wines from his grapes. And when it came to cooking, Chris was a master chef. His Louisiana dishes, and especially his gumbo, were the favorites of family, friends, and neighbors.
Being from Louisiana, Chris loved his coffee. For much of his life he would make and drink his blend of coffee with chicory throughout the day. He was often found enjoying his brew during almost any activity.
Chris and Cathy traveled all over the US. Chris loved to drive, and over his lifetime he drove about every kind of RV possible, from small travel trailers to large motorhomes. He enjoyed setting up camp, splitting firewood, building campfires, and relaxing with a glass of his wine.
Alongside his beloved wife, he explored the world by traveling across the South Seas and many continents, making friends everywhere. His disarming and sensitive personality meant he never met a stranger. Within minutes he would make friends with people from different nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds. His strength, gentleness, and calm aura made people immediately feel safe and at ease, both away and at home.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Chris’s life on Monday, September 22, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at the Davis Funeral Home. A graveside service with full military honors will follow at 2:00 PM at the West Virginia National Cemetery, accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the U.S. Army Honor Guard.
