Mary Cunningham Obituary

Mary Elladeana (Layfield) Cunningham was peacefully called home to Heaven on January 7, 2026, where she was joyfully reunited with her beloved husband, Leslie “Dale” Cunningham, who had been patiently awaiting their long-anticipated reunion.

Known with deep affection by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as “Grandma Mary,” she was born on September 28, 1937, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, to loving parents who instilled in her the values of faith, family, and compassion that she carried throughout her life. In 1955, Mary married the love of her life, Dale, beginning a beautiful partnership filled with devotion, laughter, and shared dreams. Together, they raised two daughters, Daleen and Cheryl, building a family rooted in love.

Mary leaves behind a legacy cherished by her brother, Kenna; her daughter Daleen and son-in-law Victor; their children Jennifer (and her husband Billy), Michelle, and Angela; her daughter Cheryl and granddaughter Alicia; and her adored great-grandchildren, Mackenzie, Bryce, and Gunner, each of whom held a special place in her heart.

Though West Virginia was always home, Mary also spent time living in Virginia before ultimately settling in Florida, where she enjoyed her later years. A gifted beautician by trade, Mary took pride in her work and even passed her talent and love for the craft down to her great-granddaughter, Mackenzie—one of the many ways her influence continues on.

In recent years, Mary was best known for her unwavering love of family and her enthusiasm for sports, especially basketball and football. If there was a game on, you could be sure Grandma Mary was nearby—cheering, commenting, and fully invested. She also found comfort in quiet moments playing solitaire, but it was around the dinner table where she truly shined.

Mary will forever be remembered for her infectious, belly-shaking laughter, her unforgettable storytelling, and her remarkable ability to bring the past to life—especially during holidays and family gatherings. Her joy filled every room, her kindness touched every heart, and her compassion left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Above all, Mary lived by example. She taught her family that love, when given freely and fully, can overcome anything.

Family and friends will be received at Davis Funeral Home and Cremation, 124 Olen Thomas Drive, Clarksburg, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 3:00–7:00 PM, and again on Friday, January 16, 2026, from 9:00 AM until the funeral service at 11:00 AM, with Pastor Jon Hayes officiating.
