Margaret Ann Stalnaker-Kellar, age 86, of Stonewood, passed away peacefully at River Oaks Nursing Home. She leaves behind a legacy of love and strength.
Born on November 10, 1939, in Barbour County, she was the first daughter of the late Vernon and Beryl (Lantz) Hershman. Margaret was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, William “Bill” Stalnaker, with whom she made their home in Enterprise.
She is survived by her loving husband, Wayne Kellar, her daughter, Debra (Brad) Fortney of Wyatt, WV, and her son, Randall (Mindy) Stalnaker, Butler, PA. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Ryan (Joey) Stalnaker, Macy Stalnaker, Maxwell Stalnaker, and Roxanna Stalnaker, all of Butler, PA.
Margaret was the oldest of six sisters: Barbara Mendicino of Bridgeport, Veronica Kay Southern of Pittsboro, NC, Evelyn (Jerry) Hosaflook of Bridgeport, Kathy (David) Hosaflook of Bridgeport, and Pamela Carter of Huntington. She is also survived by five nieces, four nephews, and a special niece, Heather Jo (Hosaflook) King of Severn, MD.
In addition to her parents and first husband, she was preceded in death by her longtime companion of 10 years, Okey Adams, her grandson, Bradley Fortney II, and two wonderful brothers-in-law, Dan Southern and Larry Mendicino.
For 25 years, Margaret and her sisters cherished their annual Sister Weekend, traveling to destinations such as West Virginia Bridge Day, Bob Evans Farm, the beach, and many other places. For many years, these trips also included their mother, Beryl Hershman.
Margaret graduated from Webster Springs High School, Class of 1957. Early in her career, she worked at Martha’s Beauty Shop in Shinnston. She and Bill later owned and operated Star Video in Shinnston and Salem during the 1980s. Margaret also dedicated 24 years to the Bank of Shinnston (WesBanco) before retiring. She was a 65-year member of Queen Esther Order of the Eastern Star #11 and a member of First United Methodist Church in Shinnston. Margaret was also a 14-year, three-time survivor of lung cancer.
Margaret had a deep love for WVU football. In the winter months, she and Wayne enjoyed snow birding in Georgetown, FL. They loved traveling and spending time in the sunshine.
Margaret and Debbie especially treasured their weekly Saturday shopping trips, always on the lookout for special finds and enjoying lunch together.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff of River Oaks (Jackson) in Nutter Fort for their compassionate care. Special thanks to the nurses, CNAs, and social workers.
A very special thank you to Debbie Mayle for her care and for ensuring Margaret received her McDonald’s sweet tea each morning. It meant so much to both her and Debbie to know she had her favorite drink.
A family graveside service will be held at Shinnston Memorial Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
