Margaret Singleton Obituary

Margaret P. Singleton of Clarksburg, age 91, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, April 4, 2025. She passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family. She was born in Wilson, North Carolina on September 10, 1933, the daughter of Jesse Grey Pender and Rowena Sawyer Carter Pender.  She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles Walter Singleton I; one daughter, Jan Charmaine Singleton of Morgantown, and two sons, Craig Wayne Singleton and Christopher Jerrard (Antoinette) Singleton, both of Clarksburg; seven grandchildren; several great grandchildren; one sister Gwendolyn Carter. Margaret was preceded in death by her daughter, Joy Charlene Singleton; her sons, Carl Jerome Singleton, and Charles Walter Singleton II; siblings, Ralph Carter, Ray Carter, Kenneth Pender, Fred Jr. Carter, Rowena Carter, Vivian Clark and Odetha Kenney.  In addition, she is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

Margaret was a homemaker and family manager for most of her years. Those who knew her could speak to her tenacity, discipline, and personal commitment.  Those were the same traits that led her to receive training and certification as a Pharmacy Technician. She was employed at Kroger’s Pharmacy for several years.  She was active in her community, working with groups responsible for making neighborhood improvements. She was especially proud when one of those group efforts resulted in the installation of safer and more practical sidewalks and walkways in her neighborhood on E.B. Saunders Way. It was a small accomplishment, but it made a world of difference to both Margaret and to her community. She was also an active member of the Harrison County Democrats, a member of the Clarksburg Woman’s Club, and she frequently volunteered at the Mustard Seed.

Margaret was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Clarksburg, where she served as a former Parish Council member.  And to her great pleasure, she sang in the church choir at Immaculate Conception.  Margaret had a beautiful singing voice and she felt a special kinship with the choir members. She would talk about them long and often, with a sparkle in her eyes and a smile on her face. Margaret was an avid reader and she traveled the world……through books.  She loved playing piano and could often be seen walking the trail at Riverbend Park.
