John Joseph McKenna

June 15, 1956 ~ April 21, 2022 (age 65)


John Joseph McKenna, 65, of Dagsboro, DE passed away on Thursday, April 21, 2022 at his daughters’ residence in Fairmont, WV. Surrounded and supported by family, John fought a courageous 2 year battle with cancer. The family’s hearts are heavy with loss, but know that he shines above alongside his wife, with the love and joy with which they graced this earth. He was born June 15, 1956, son of the late John Joseph and Grace Louise McCoskery McKenna. John was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 30 years, Nancy Elise Umstead McKenna on May 30, 2020 as well as his parents and brother Kevin McKenna. He is survived by his two daughters, Shannon Marie Davis and husband Daniel with one grandchild on the way, Fairmont, WV; Katherine Elise Boehman and husband Josh, Frederick, MD; one brother, Joseph McKenna and wife Laura, Ellicott City, MD; as well as several nieces,  nephews and cousins.

Born in Brooklyn, NY he was a graduate of Einstein High School in Kensington, MD. After graduation, he worked tirelessly to provide for himself and others, ending his career as a self-employed distributor for grocery stores, like Giant and Safeway, before retiring. He enjoyed walking on the boardwalk, traveling, riding bikes, camping and DIY projects in his spare time. Most of all, John loved spending time alongside his family. He use to say “Be joyful for what you have and always keep the faith.”

The joint celebration of life for both Nancy and John McKenna will be held on May 28th at Middletown United Methodist Church in Middletown, MD. The family will receive friends from 4PM-5PM on Saturday, May 28th with the celebration of their lives service following immediately after.  A reception with food and drinks will be held following the service.
