John O Johnson 86, of Nutter Fort passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2025 at his residence with family by his side. He was born on March 6, 1939 in Clarksburg the son of the late Clarence Johnson.
John served his country in the United States Navy serving twenty-two years during the Vietnam War. He also retired from the State of WV working at the Machin Clinic, and last hosted 8 years at the Gerald Freeman Campground. He was an avid outdoorsman: hunting, fishing, and camping. John was known to many as “Grandpa”.
John is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joetta Bell Johnson whom he married on September 23, 1957; two daughters, Elizabeth Wheeler, Nutter Fort, Kathy DeBos (Bruce), Lebanon, OH; five grandchildren, Michael Harbert (fiancée Catherine), Nutter Fort, Derrick Harbert (fiancée Lindsey), Huntington, Danielle Leach (Adam), West Middletown, PA, Daylene Washington (Dom), Seabrook Island, SC, Darci DeBos (fiancé Chance), Hickory, PA; 15 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren; three sisters, Mary Baughman, Clarksburg, Ruby Hughes, Clarksburg, Beulah Gyke, Wheelersburg, many nieces, nephews and friends .
In addition to his father, John was preceded in death by his brothers, Buck Johnson and Jerry Johnson; three brothers-in-law, Jerry Hughes, Fred Gyke, and David Baughman; son-in-law, Robert “Bob” Wheeler.
Family will receive friends for visitation at Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Drive Clarksburg, WV 26301, on Tuesday, August 19, 2025 from 3-7:00PM and on Wednesday, August 20, 2025 from 9:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:30AM with Pastor Sherman Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow at the WV National Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the US Navy Honor Guard.
