Jeffrey Carl Franklin, 80, of Charleston, WV, passed away unexpectedly after a short illness on Friday, 6 September 2024.
Jeff, known to his parents and extended family as Carl, was born to Jesse Benjamin and Eleanor Jane (Curry) Franklin in Clarksburg, WV. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1961 and earned a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from West Virginia University in 1966.
His professional career spanned 38.5 years beginning in 1966 with the NY State Dept of Transportation and transitioned to the federal government with the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Military Traffic Management Command, and the US Dept. of Interior, retiring in 2004. He belonged to ASCE, NARFE, SAME and was a registered Professional Engineer. He was a longtime member of the Lions Club International and the Free Masons – York Rite.
He married the love of his life, Vivien, 59 years ago. Together they raised five children, traveled the world, and made friends wherever they went. He instilled in his children the importance of an education and was proud to see them all achieve degrees and pursue careers. He had a passion for genealogy / family history, sharing information with his brother, cousins, children and grandchildren. He made sure we knew who we were related to and how.
Jeff’s interest were wide and varied. He enjoyed photography, rifle and pistol marksmanship, concept cooking, archeology, physics, engineering, gardening, traveling, reading, and politics & current affairs. He enjoyed exercising on his rowing machine and is in the concept two record as a multi million meter man!
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, and bother James William. He is survived by his wife Vivien; daughter Deborah Linzmaier; daughter Jennifer Franklin-Knowles (John); daughter Anne-Marie Deitsch (Scott); son LTC(R) Jeffrey Carl Franklin III (Kriss); daughter Mary Ellen Franklin (Aaron); grandchildren Nicholas, Victoria, Sam, John David, Luke, Jason, Marie; brother John R Franklin (Margaret); nephew Frankie Tindal; Aunt Helen Ruth Curry; and many, many cousins.
The viewing will be held at Davis Funeral Home (124 Olen Thomas Drive, Clarksburg, WV 26301) on 13 September 2024 from 3:00 to 7:00 PM ET and on 14 September from 9:00 to 11:30 AM ET. A Celebration of Life will commence at 11:30 AM ET. Interment will follow at the Seventh Day Baptist Church Cemetery in Lost Creek, WV.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital, the American Heart Association, and the American Cancer Society.
