James "Craig" Mankin

February 23, 1938 ~ April 19, 2022 (age 84)


James Craig Mankin, 84, of Verner WV, passed away on April 19, 2022 at United Hospital Center. James was born on February 23, 1938 in Red Jacket, WV, the son of the late Archie Arnette and Myrtle Louise Evans Mankin.

Craig graduated from Magnolia High School, with the Matewan Class of 1956. After high school he attended West Virginia University where he obtained his Master’s Degree in Education. Craig enjoyed all types of sports which included playing baseball for WVU. His athletic success granted him the honor of being recorded in the books for being the first freshman to hit a homerun over the old Hawley Field. Craig married his high school sweetheart, Susan O'Brien. Craig and Susan were happily married for 55 years. Susan was known as his "Susie Q". They worked together to build a home and life they dearly loved. He was last employed as the Principal of Man High School. They enjoyed their retirement days at their "Get Away Home" in Myrtle Beach. Craig was a very proud father and grandfather. The summers were spent playing with their 3 beautiful granddaughters. He always bragged about his children and grandchildren's accomplishments. In his younger years, Craig was an outdoorsman. He loved being outdoors and enjoyed hunting. Craig was also an avid Mountaineer fan. He never missed a football or basketball game that was televised. He was always wearing his gold and blue as he cheered on the Mountaineers from his living room.

Craig is survived by his two children, Craig Arnette Mankin and wife Regina of Morgantown, and Jeana Susan Keener and husband Ronald of Fairmont; five grandchildren, Mikaela Suzanne Atkinson, Laura Rose Atkinson, Casey Renee Mankin, Gia and Kruz Kenner.

In addition to his parents, Craig is preceded in death by his wife, Susan Mankin on March 11, 2018; one grandchild, Caleb James Mankin.

 A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
