Gregory Allen “Greg” Knotts, 59, of Bridgeport, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2026, at his residence, surrounded by his family. A man who built his life with his hands and lived it on his own terms, Greg will be remembered for his tireless work ethic, his stubborn independence, and the way he enjoyed life’s simple moments.
Born on July 3, 1966, in Morgantown, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Delbert Ray and Sharon Lee Taylor Knotts. A proud graduate of Flemington High School, Class of 1984, Greg wasted little time carving out his own path. He founded and operated Knotts Excavating for more than 30 years — a business built not just on equipment and contracts, but on grit, reputation, and long days of honest labor. Greg truly loved “playing in the dirt,” and there was no job too tough or too messy for him to tackle.
Work was never just work to Greg — it was who he was. He took pride in seeing a project through from start to finish, in fixing what others couldn’t, and in figuring out how things worked. Whether he was running heavy equipment, tinkering around the house, or repairing something most people would have thrown away, he found satisfaction in staying busy and solving problems.
When he wasn’t working, which wasn't often, Greg enjoyed collecting guns, feeding the deer in his back yard, watching a good western on television, and shooting the bull with his neighbors. Those close to him will remember his straightforward nature and his strong opinions- but above all, they will remember his heart. Greg couldn’t stand to see anyone hurting. He'd give you the shirt off his back and every dollar in his pocket. His daughter, Shirley, will tell you: “That's the reason God blessed him like he did.”
Greg’s greatest pride was his daughter, Shirley Ann-Knotts Koehler and his grandbabies were his joy. AnnaMae, 13, is the reincarnation of her mother- In a way, Greg's second chance to relive his daughter's childhood moments through his granddaughter- and he took full advantage of it. Greg spent more time, hugged a little longer and stayed up a little later in order to soak up every moment he could. Oliver, 1 ½, is the grandson he always wanted. Someone to showboat on the dump truck and the excavator- someone to play in the dirt with. He was so excited to finally have a boy. Greg showed those babies off every chance he got. They were truly his everything. Greg was a hard shell to crack but once you did, he’d move heaven and earth for you. Jacob Koehler, Shirley’s husband, became such a man. He became the son he never had and would often call him just to shoot the breeze or ask him to fix some piece of technology for the 100th time. He loved his family more than any man possibly could, and there won't be a day that goes by that they won't miss every piece of him.
Greg is also survived by his siblings: Tammy Jo Ketterman and husband Jeff of Flemington; Terry Ray Knotts and wife Sheila of Flemington; and Jeannie Grogg of Bridgeport; along with several nieces and nephews who will remember him as the uncle who would do anything for anybody.
Per his request, Greg will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life gathering will be held February 28th from 1 to 3 pm at 880 Blueville Dr, Grafton, WV 26354 where friends and family can share memories, and laughter just the way he would have wanted.
