Gary E. Swiger, 77, of Salem passed away on Sunday, June 22, 2025 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on April 8, 1948 in Bristol, a son of the late Warren E. Swiger and Freda Posey Swiger.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Elizabeth “Libby” Boner Swiger, whom he married on August 3, 1968.
He is also survived by one daughter, Missy Hall and husband Frank of Jane Lew and one son, Shane M. Swiger and wife Dody of Salem, one granddaughter, Shelby Hall and three grandsons, Jordan Hall, Braiden Swiger and wife Brittany and Garytt Swiger and wife Samantha; one great granddaughter, Bayla Jade Hall and one great grandson, Grayson Swiger; and one sister, Lisa Criss and husband Randy of Salem.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by one brother, Roger Swiger.
Gary was a graduate of Bristol High School, class of 1966 and proudly served in the United States Army. He was employed with Baker Hughes as a welder for 35 years until his retirement. Gary was a man who found joy in the simple pleasures of life, the roar of a well-tuned engine, the quiet of an early morning in the woods, and the warmth of family gathered close. A lifelong car enthusiast, Gary had a special love for classic cars, especially his 1955 Crown Victoria and 1972 GMC, both of which he lovingly restored. NASCAR Sundays and afternoons spent under the hood were among his favorite pastimes. An avid outdoorsman, Gary enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time in nature and his camp at Bemis. He was known for his generosity, easygoing nature, and the way he could strike up a conversation with just about anyone. His family was the center of his world, and he shared a deep, enduring bond with his high school sweetheart, whom he later married. Gary’s presence was one of kindness, authenticity, and quiet strength, a true friend, a loving husband, and a man who lived with heart and purpose.
