Freda Elizabeth (Matson) Courtney

Surrounded by her loving family, Freda Elizabeth Matson Courtney, 96, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 11, 2025. She was born on May 15, 1929, in Clarksburg, WV, to the late Virgil E. and Greta Poe Matson, and was raised and educated in Clarksburg. Freda was the last surviving member of her family, as she was an only child.

She was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Courtney, a great-grandson, Ryan Hutchinson, and a great-granddaughter, Courtney Higginbotham, and the love of her life, Charles J. Courtney, who passed away on May 15, 2014. Freda and Charles shared 68 wonderful years of marriage.

Freda is survived by her three loving sons: Gary E. Courtney and Jacqueline Buckler of Flemington; Randy D. Courtney and wife Pam of Morgantown; and Timothy C. Courtney and wife Barbara of Floyd, VA. She also leaves behind four grandchildren: Christopher Courtney of Clarksburg, Stacy Higginbotham and Jason of Clarksburg; Eric Courtney and Lexi Shoemaker of Santa Monica, CA, and Melinda Hutchinson and the late Jeff of Salem, VA. Her six great-grandchildren: Kayleigh Courtney, Keara Courtney, Danelle Courtney, Delaney Courtney, Carson Higginbotham, and Tyler Hutchinson.

A devoted homemaker, Freda was a member of the Oak Mound Evangelical Church since 1973. She sang in the church choir and served in the Women’s Missionary Society. She cherished family gatherings, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. An avid dog lover, she also enjoyed tending her garden and canning its bounty—labors of love, she happily shared with her family.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Fairmont Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center for their wonderful care.

Private graveside services will be held.

Family will receive friends at the Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Dr. Rt. 98, Clarksburg for a Celebration of Life Service on Saturday, September 6, 2025 at 1:00pm with Pastor Steve DeLay officiating.
