Donald Leggett Obituary

Donald Edward Leggett, 72, of Clarksburg, entered his heavenly home on January 11, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born on January 8, 1953, son of the late Don Odell Leggett and Donna Joann Keys Leggett both of whom preceded him in death. He married his wife Dorothy Louise Davis Leggett on December 7, 1973.  She preceded him in death on January 11, 2015.

Donald is survived by one sister, Deanna Hoskinson and husband Terry of Clarksburg. Donald was also preceded in death by one sister, Debra Trimmer of Clarksburg. Donald is survived by three loving children: Daniel Leggett and wife Laura of Good Hope, Douglas Leggett of Clarksburg and Dawn Hensil and husband Eric of Salem. Donald was blessed with five grandchildren: Sami, Daniel, MaKayla, Anthony, and Lacy.  He was even more blessed to have four great grandchildren with another one expected this summer.

At the age of 16, Donald unfortunately suffered a serious motorcycle accident.  Donald refers to this time as when his life started all over again.  Before the accident he spent his time reading as much as he could.  He would recall being taken every week to the library and feeling frustrated that he was running out of books there.  Due to the accident he spent approximately a month in a coma, and many months working to regain strength and abilities.  Donald has always had an indomitable spirit and strong resilience.  Because of that strength, he was able to return to high school and graduate from Victory High School in 1972.  Doctors told him and his parents that he would never be able to work a traditional job or have a normal life.  In spite of this prediction, Donald proved them all wrong by working for The Department of Highways Gore office for 40 years and performed many duties but being most known for operating the fuel house.  He endured working long hours in all weather conditions.  He did everything that he could to make sure that his family was taken care of and sometimes would go without so that his family would be provided for. Donald had a deep love for his family and would drop everything in order to make sure those he loved were cared for.  In spring of 2014 Donald retired from the D.O.H. with 40 years of service.  He often joked that he no longer needed his wrist watch because he had spent many years following a schedule and now, he can do whatever he wants when he wants.  He loved his mother very much and spent most of the last few years of his life caring for her until she passed this past April.

Donald frequented the Harrison County Senior center making sure to catch lunch and sometimes breakfast nearly every day.  He enjoyed visiting with the people there and would often talk about the classes he would attend such as Tai Chi.  He sometimes stayed after lunch to play bingo.  He loved taking drives, particularly to Doddridge County where he had lots of family. He also loved popping in to visit his family while out on one of his drives.

Donald leaves a legacy of unwavering love and strength that he held onto up to the very last moment.

Donald was a Christian and attended Wilsonburg Baptist Church his entire life.  His faith was unwavering.  Even after receiving the bad news of his cancer diagnosis, he responded to the news by saying that it was ok because he knew where he was headed.  The family of Donald Leggett have no doubt that he now walks with the Lord.

His fight against his cancer diagnosis was a valiant one and he refused to give up until the very end. His life wasn’t always easy but that never affected his kind soul.  Donald was very loved by both family and friends and will be deeply missed.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 from 3:00-7:00pm at Davis Funeral Home on Rt. 98 Clarksburg/Nutter Fort and on Thursday, January 16, 2025 from 9:00 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00 AM with Pastor Brian Thompson presiding. Entombment will follow in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens.
