Derek “Duff” Sharp Obituary

Derek “Duff” Eugene Sharp, 72, of Clarksburg, WV, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 12th, 2024 at Cornerstone Medical Center in Huntington, WV with family by his side.

Derek was born January 30th, 1952 in Clarksburg, WV, the son of the late Mary Frances (Sharp) and later raised as his own by Joseph (Bully) Griffin.

Derek was known to many for his kind heart and childlike sense of humor; he would give the shirt off his back to help someone in need.  Always a smile or laugh would greet you, and he was always a ‘sharp’ dresser with the latest styles – bright colors were his thing.

When he wasn’t playing basketball, listening to reggae or gospel music, drinking Diet Coke, or playing with his Dobermanns, Derek was rejoicing in the word of God and renewing his love for all things in life through his devotion to Christ.

Derek was a basketball standout and a starter at Washington Irving High School, where his love for the game began.  Derek attended Shepherd University where he continued playing basketball.  He later joined the U.S. Marines and was drafted into the Vietnam war, escaping the frontlines while in bootcamp when the war ended. Derek was a beloved employee at Hope Natural Gas where he served as a well tender for nearly 20 years. He loved being in the wilderness and often spoke of the peace the morning sun brought him, and the strength the West Virginia winters required. He would continue speaking of his love for nature, especially after visiting his sister in Hawaii and experiencing the natural beauty of the islands.

When health, habit, and disability became too challenging, Derek became a proud resident and volunteer at a newly established Veterans home in Barboursville, where he operated a clothing room and helped set-up living quarters for other veterans.

Derek lived the majority of his life in Clarksburg, WV and his final years in Huntington.

Derek is survived by two children, Derek Eugene Cooley and Melissa Dawn Steffan, and two grandchildren, Quinten Cooley and Gemma Liuzzi.

Derek is survived by four siblings, Lynn (Stefan) Wilkinson, Lawrence (Lisa) Griffin, Troy Griffin, and Joseph Griffin II, and is preceded in death by parents Mary and Joseph and two siblings, Spencer Griffin and Mary Shaikh.  Derek is also survived by seven nephews and six nieces in WV, VA, MD, CA and HI.

Derek will be laid to rest with Military Honors at the WV National Cemetery by private burial.
