Carol Curtis Obituary

Carol Curtis, formerly of Bridgeport WV, passed away peacefully at the age of 95 on Jan 4, 2025 in Liberty MO.

Born Joan Carol Betler on Jan 18, 1929, she was the daughter of Hazel Julia Brooks Betler Houchin of Brooks Hill WV and Louis Fred Betler of Helvetia WV.  She was born on her father's 21st birthday in Suncrest, Randolph County, WV.

She graduated from Roosevelt Wilson High School in Nutter Fort WV in 1946. She met her future husband, Gene Cayton Curtis of Salem WV, while attending WVU.  They were married in Clarksburg WV on July 29, 1949. They lived in Clarksburg and Salem West Virginia until 1953 when they moved to Akron Ohio.  They returned to Morgantown WV in 1970 where Gene was a State Farm Agent. Carol moved to Bridgeport following Gene’s death.  They raised four children - Julane, Brooke, Heather and Gene.

Carol was a member and officer of the PTA in Akron and Morgantown.  She was a former member of South Arlington United Methodist Church in Akron, Wesleyan United Methodist Church in Morgantown, and was a current member of Bridgeport United Methodist Church in Bridgeport WV.  She was also a past member of the Clarksburg Women’s Club, Bridgeport Women’s Club and Red Hat Society. She was a Charter Member of the Maplewood Independent Living Community from 2001 until Feb 2024 when she moved to Missouri to live with her eldest daughter.

Carol's career as a working wife and mother included being an Avon Representative in Akron OH and an employee of the classified ad department at the Dominion Post in Morgantown WV. She was an executive tax preparer for 24 years with H&R Block in Morgantown WV, the only preparer with that title.

An avid reader she valued education and encouraged her children to a life-long love of learning, instilling in each of them a strong sense of independence. Interested in genealogy and family history, Carol worked with both her husband and eldest daughter to expand the family history.  She realized a life-long dream when she became a member of the Alexander Doniphan Chapter of the NSDAR in Liberty MO.

She was a devoted friend and was close to many, many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.  She will be remembered by the Lindsay Ave Gang of kids in Akron Ohio as “Mrs. C” who welcomed all to play in her yard and on the front porch.  Her nieces and nephews call her an amazing woman and wonderful aunt who rarely missed sending birthday cards and treated them like real persons instead of kids who should “go play”.

Carol was preceded in death by both her parents and her husband as well as many friends and relatives.  Survivors are: brother David R Houchin of Clarksburg WV; daughters Julane B Crabtree (Donald) of Liberty MO, C Brooke Moulton (Randy) of Winchester VA, Heather L Ward (Michael) of Buckhannon; son Gene C. Curtis II (Odalie) of Glen Ridge NJ; grandchildren Brian A Bailey of Lawrence KS,  Megan A Moulton Byrd (Harry) of Lexington KY, Cassey B Moulton Nichols (Jeremy) of Winchester VA, Shannon L Moulton (fiancé Matthew Gibbons) of Crestview FL, Savannah R Ward Miller (David) of North Hollywood CA, Gene Cayton Curtis III of Nashville TN, Jackson B Curtis of Glen Ridge NJ and Joshua L Curtis of Glen Ridge NJ; great-grandchildren Lucy C Nichols and Avery E Nichols both of Winchester VA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins.

The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Maplewood for their years of service and caring and the caregivers of both Three Oaks Hospice and Our Lady of Mercy Country Home for their loving care during Carol’s illness.

Family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home, 124 Olen Thomas Dr., Clarksburg, on Friday, January 17, 2025 from 10:00am until the time of the funeral service at 12:00noon with Reverend Dr. Matthew Paugh officiating.  Private Interment will take place at Good Hope Masonic Cemetery.
