Brenda Anne McCullough Fortney, 83, of Shinnston passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on January 4, 2024, after a lengthy battle with dementia. She was born December 14, 1940, in Spencer, NC. She was the daughter of the late Helen Marie Wilson Harman of Spencer, NC, and the late Herron Alexander Arnold of Rocky Mount, NC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Barrett Wilson of Winston-Salem, NC; one infant brother, Carolina Beach, NC; her stepfather, Robert Walter Harman, of Rosemont; sister-in-law, Catherine Fortney Gelhausen, Grafton; sister-in-law Rheta Fortney Zorik,  Painesville, OH; brother-in-law, Harold Grover Fortney, Jr., and sister-in-law Dorothy Plott Fortney of Grafton.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 63 years, Kenneth Franklin Fortney, of Shinnston, whom she married December 25, 1960, in Salisbury, NC; one daughter, Kimberly Fortney Howell of Shinnston and her husband, David; one son, Kevin Fortney of Shinnston; one granddaughter, Jenna Howell of Clarksburg, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Brenda attended Flemington High School and graduated from Old Fort High School in North Carolina in 1959. She also attended Appalachian State College in Boone, NC. Brenda worked at Erwin Supply in Shinnston as a receptionist, retiring with 14 years of service. She also worked as a receptionist at Mountain State Auto Auction for 11 years and sold Home Interiors. Brenda is a member of the Bridgeport Church of Christ.

Brenda was able to raise her children as a stay-at-home mother. She was an amazing cook who used recipes handed down from her southern family throughout the years. She enjoyed the beaches of Oak Island, North Carolina where her family lived. Brenda had a good sense of humor and loved animals. She loved her family unconditionally and enjoyed spending time with them. She never met a stranger. She was cherished and will be missed by all who knew her.

Brenda graciously donated her body to the Human Gift Registry at WVU. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held later.
