Booker T. "Bokete" Ford Obituary

THE ONE and ONLY!
Booker T (Bokete) Ford, age 78, of Mount Clare, WV, was called home on March 7, 2024. Booker was born on March 26, 1945 in Mullens SC, raised both in South Carolina and Tampa Florida, son of the late Flossie Mae Stokes Ford-Johnson and Noah Ford. He is survived in love by Annette Love-Ford; his adoring children: Equilla Anne Ford, Stanley Eathan Ford, Brooke Denise Ford (and her 4 children Brittani, Benson, BoKyte, and Brilyn), Kanika Michelle Scandolari (Vincent Scandolari), Aishia Ford; daughter-in-law, Keisha Ford and her daughter, Ka’Niyah; bonus children, Ametro Little, and Arlando Love; loving grandfather of 13 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren;  5 bonus grandchildren; 3 bonus great-grandchildren; 18 brothers and sisters: Ulysses (Cassie) Ford, Mary Ford, Dixie Lee (Albert) Holton, Mattie Johnson Smith, Alice Fay (Jerry) Fennie, Sarah Jean White, Carlene Harris (Reggie), Patricia Johnson Durant, Flossie Johnson (Jasper) Brisbon, Deloris Johnson-Brown, Connie Jr. (Clara) Johnson, Carolyn Stokes Johnson (Elbert) Lewis, Calvin (Diane) Johnson, Shirley Murray, Ricky Johnson; three sisters-in-law, Mildred Johnson, Emme Johnson, Mamie Ford; and numerus nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Booker T. was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Darnelle Ford; 5 brothers, Jimmy Lee Ford, Harrison Johnson, Douglas Johnson, Cornie M “Wayne” Johnson, James Johnson; and one sister, Nora Lee Ford.

Booker T was just like his name, unique in every way. With a passion for living, Booker always said he wasn’t going to pass away, because he had a multitude to lead, and indeed, he did. He left a pure legacy behind him, and anyone that knew Booker knew he loved his family. He grew up with 22 brothers and sisters, where love was always easy to find. He was known and loved by all. Life lesson and talks wouldn’t have been memorable to his children without his “Booker T-isms" words and phrases that only made sense if you knew and loved him. Feets, Music Roll (Toilet paper), “Same thing that will make you laugh, will make you cry,” “Up jumps the devil and the Oreo”, and “ Just sit down and listen, you may learn something” are just a few of these everlasting sentiments that Booker has left the with world. At 15 years old, Booker T lied about his age, got his driver's license, and started to work to provide for his mother and younger siblings. Being self-taught, he learned to run every piece of heavy equipment there was to further his career. His specialty was cranes and coming up in the industry throughout the 50s, 60s and 70s, it was unheard of for a black man to hold such superior positions. At the time, Booker became one of 5 people that could run barge cranes on water. He retired from Local Union 132, out of Clarksburg, WV. There are not too many roads in WV that Booker did not have a hand in building or working on. The late Thomas gave Booker T one of his proudest moments, deciding to follow in his footsteps to learn his father's trade, and joining him at Union 132. Booker T. was an Ordained Minister and a Deacon of the of the church.

Booker enjoyed going fishing, playing cards, story-telling, grilling his famous ribs, chicken and salmon were just a few of Booker T’s favorite things. He loved making his homemade “sipping wine”, which he swears everyone begged him for, and that was the truth. Every police officer in Bridgeport and Clarksburg told him that they would never give him a ticket or arrest him if he just kept them stocked up on his wine. He loved life and found happiness in the bad times, as well as the good. But the thing he loved most in this world was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Booker was certainly one of a kind. He will always be remembered for “the One and Only” that he truly was. He will be sorely missed as his legacy goes lives on.
