Betty Kostelac Obituary

Betty Lou Kostelac, 93, of Shinnston, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 19, 2023 in Clarksburg.  She was born on July 6, 1929 in Buckhannon, a daughter of the late Frank Elbon and Pearl Goodwin Elbon.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Carl Kostelac.

She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Ann Been of Bridgeport; grandchildren, Sara Beth Been of Morgantown, Jennifer Rhoades of NC, Betty Byrd of East View, and Melissa Bee and her husband Kevin of Wilsonburg; great grandchildren, Alexis Riggleman, Elijah Riggleman, Asia Rhoades, Jonathan Rhoades, Andra Bee and Kaitlyn Bee; and several nieces and nephews, Frank and Jeannette Halterman, Clara Valentino, Margie Hodges, and Robert and Patty Costelac

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by her son, Carl J. Kostelac, Jr., one son-in-law, Bill Been; grandson-in-law Michael Byrd and two brothers and one sister.

Betty enjoyed being with people.  She lived at River Oaks for the last several years.  She was always on the move-doing crafts, attending church and church sings, and playing bingo.  Heaven help us if we visited during bingo.  Betty worked at GC Murphy’s lunch counter, which she managed until the store closed in 1985.  Retirement didn’t suit mom so she went to work at the Blue Bird, owned by Frank Lopez and later by Eric Leaseburg.  Many people in Clarksburg have probably enjoyed her meatballs and fritti’s.  She worked almost all of the Italian Heritage Festivals.  She only quit working because her mind started betraying her.  Betty was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America and the American Legion Auxiliary Post 31 in Shinnston.

We would like to thank all of the staff at River Oaks for their excellent care, companionship and friendship that was given to Betty.  They gave her a great social life in her last year.

Per her wishes she will be cremated and there will be no services at this time.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice in her memory.
