Nellie Hudkins Obituary

Nellie Pauline (Browning) Hudkins, age 97, of Clarksburg, WV and most recently of Rosewood Nursing Home in Grafton, WV went to be with her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, February 13, 2018. She was known as Nellie, as Pauline, as Mom, and as Grandma Polly.

She was born in Braxton County, WV, and was the last surviving child of George Daniel Browning and Catherine Jane Browning. As a child, she moved to Barbour County, WV where she met and married Richard D. Hudkins on June 22, 1940, who passed away on January 24, 1995. She was Methodist and raised her children in the Methodist Church in Barbour County, the Methodist Church in Stonewood and the Stealey United Methodist Church.

She was primarily a homemaker, wife of a coal miner, and mom to four children. The family worked the family farm on Stewart’s Run in Barbour County until 1964.

A woman of many talents, family and friends cherish her quilts, ornaments that decorated Christmas Trees, needlepoint, crochet and knitting projects, special occasion’s clothes, delicious food dishes, beautiful special occasion’s cakes, her flowers gardens and harvests from vegetable gardens. Her special gift, however, was a natural affection of others paired with a natural acceptance that made family and friends feel loved, supported and welcomed. She enjoyed visits and phone calls from family and friends.

Nellie is survived by three children, Richard D. Hudkins & his wife, Deb of San Antonio, TX, June Upton & her husband, Austin of Grafton, WV, and  Jane Hudkins of Morgantown, WV; a daughter-in-law, Marsha K. Hudkins of Fairmont, WV. Her grandchildren are Jill Robbins (and Husband Lee), Darrin Hudkins, Heather England (and husband Todd), Jaimee Upton (and fiancée Ronnie Tasker), Holly Hudkins, Chad Koppold (and wife Sherri), and Chelsea Joslin (and husband Michael). Great grandchildren are Laura Martin ( and her husband Joseph), Zach Robbins, Kyle Robins, Lauren England, Taylor England, Payton England, Layne England, Cole Upton, Bella Bellair, Gunner Bellair, Ethan Koppold, Emily Koppold, Kailey Joslin and Khloe Joslin. She is also survived by one sister-in-law, Evelyn “Tootie” Browning and many Browning and Hudkins nieces, nephews, cousins and a devoted assortment of friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her last born child, Mason Scott Hudkins who loved her dearly; five brothers, Roy, Charlie, Graydon, Arden, and Hoy; a sister, Ellen Root; and all of her husband’s siblings.
