Gayne Paul (GP) Underwood died peacefully June 27, 2017 of natural causes at his home in Bridgeport, West Virginia. GP was 95.
GP was born February 15, 1922 in Chafee, Missouri to Ira and Florence Underwood. He attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. GP enlisted in the ARMY Air Force during World War 2, where he graduated from flight school. He was the assigned to a Bomber group in the Pacific Theater, where he commanded both B-17 and B-29 bombers. GP flew numerous combat missions over both Japan and the combat fronts in the Pacific Theater. He continued in the ARMY Air Force through the end of the war, also serving as a test pilot and flight instructor.
After the war, GP went to work flying for Trans World Airlines. He logged many thousands of flight hours, both domestic and international. His last several years as a commercial pilot were marked as Trans World Airlines Senior Pilot, captaining a Boing 747 jet. His retirement was in 1981.
GP was a long time resident of Sparta New Jersey, and a member of Lake Mohawk Golf Club, and was an avid golfer. He moved to West Virginia over 2 years ago to be closer to family.
GP loved his dogs, was an passionate hiker, and had a lifelong love of music. GP played the bass fiddle, and regularly played with local jazz bands.
His son, Bill; his daughters, Kate, Kris, Keri; and his ten grandchildren survive GP. His wife, Georgia, precedes him in death.
G.P. Will be dearly missed and will be buried in a private ceremony in Sparta, New Jersey.
